How your paycheck is built

Pre-tax deductions (like 401(k) or health insurance) lower your taxable pay first. Then income-tax withholding and — for US employees — FICA payroll tax of 7.65% (6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare) are applied. The resulting annual net is divided by your number of pay periods to give your per-paycheck take-home.

Estimate only — not tax advice. FICA's Social Security portion is capped at the annual wage base ($176,100 for 2025).
